Ah, that's what you meant by the entrance being widened.
Hopefully, a lot of things will happen with the summer.

Well, there were certainly things happening last night. I'm not close enough to the crossing for the noise to affect me, but there was a considerable lot of very odd sound coming from work being done near the crossing. I had a little nose around at about 12.50am, and I couldn't quite work out what was being done. They were apparently working on the White City side of the crossing, and the noises were really weird - sort of electronic.
Between midnight and 12.30am, the end of Bathurst Road was alive with police officers and dogs. I asked a neighbour what was going on, and he said that they were searching for someone. They definitely went into a number of back gardens. I have no idea who they were searching for or if they found him (her?), but it was all over by the time I went out again at 12.50am. I did wonder if it had something to do with the equipment on the allotment site, but decided that it probably didn't. It is more likely that someone reported an intruder, possibly someone trying to commit a burglary on a house.

The new path is now open and in use. I went over the allotments today to water some plants, and was amazed at how many users there were in just a few minutes. The information must have got out on the grapevine. It is popular with cyclists.

Good news for a change, to paraphrase Morrissey.
I'll have to take a ride over myself. My top two gears slip like made but the next one down is OK for now...

I discovered the most astonishing thing last night while walking my dog along the diverted footpath - there is a large apple tree growing just on the Network Rail side of the fence, not far from my allotment. How did I never notice this before??? It is covered in fruit. Some apples have fallen - mainly the rotten ones - but some are all right. I took one home last night and cut out the bad parts and tasted the rest. It was really nice, crisp, juicy and fairly sharp. I'm going to tell Dave Kaspar of Day's Cottage, as it may be a new variety. How likely is it that some employee of British Rail around 25 years ago planted a sapling tree in that location? It's more likely that the tree grew from a seed in an apple core thrown from a train window or even from the allotments. If so, then it has to be a new variety. Most apple trees that grow from pips produce horrid fruit; good new varieties are rare.

There are some juicy looking apples on that tree, but they're so high up it's difficult to get at them. I took a few pictures. This one came out best, for showing the variety, anyway. Attachments:

I've been collecting the fallers every day. There are more than you'd think, because they roll down and get hidden behind the fence. The variety turns out to be a really good cooker. I've baked a couple of pies. Yum.
I'm going to use a pole to collect a few apples from the tree and take them to be inspected by Dave Kaspar.

Well, I collected a nice lot of apples today, both fallers and the ones still on the tree. I used a fruit picking pole that a friend bought for me a few years ago. At the time I said 'what the heck am I going to use this for', but now it has come in useful.
I took a selection of apples and a bit of cooked apple to Dave Kaspar and his partner Helen in Brookthorpe. They were busy making apple juice and cider, but were happy to take five minutes to inspect and taste the apples. They agreed with me that it doesn't appear to be an existing variety, and that it is really nice.

The Citizen is really slow off the mark. The rail footpath officially opened yesterday, as reported by Radio Gloucestershire at lunchtime. More than a day later, there is still no mention of it on The Citizen's website. Network Rail's press release says that the path unites the twin communities of Tredworth and Robinswood, rather than White City. The biggest bit of bullshit is the claim that there were 111 incidents of trespass and vandalism at the crossing from 2000 to 2006! I remember that there were actually claimed to be around 40 incidents, and that some were clearly near the cemetery or even at Tuffley. Still, let's not allow the facts to get in the way of a good press release.
