If there is one individual in Gloucestershire who screams Common Purpose, it's Sally Pickering. Council candidate for the Green Party, agitator against Conservative-led council finance policies, and she even organised a luncheon for Richard Graham (on the day of the boundaries march) where he was ambushed by ranting lefties. To be fair, our MP is quite useless, but there are proper ways to challenge him, and as Pickering would say, I'm 'not sure this is helpful' (though I'll bet she didn't say it that day).
Pickering might also say, though, that that is 'history' now, and she doesn't want to 'dwell' on it. At least one of her underlings wouldn't agree with her about forgetting the past... Looking at the present or to the future? Let's do both
Now, today, we read that the Chequers Community Centre continues to be closed, after 18 months, because 'interest' shown by Gavca in reviving it was not followed up with action. In fact, Gavca did not respond to the council's 'advances', and now the council are going to 'look at new users to take it on'. God only know who they might end up being, and the community have had any hope of being consulted on the matter snatched away from them because this kind of thing is much too important to be discussed in front of us plebs.
Theoretically, Gavca should be an organisation that backs community involvement (or rather, that anodyne phrase, 'community cohesion') to the hilt. In practise, they're a bolshie, left-leaning outfit who rarely pass up an opportunity to pave the way for the 'Glorious Day'. To continue that analogy, though, they're building their 'road to nowhere' with resources that could fill a dozen or more community potholes.
And if I'm starting to sound like a Gloucester Guido, again, I have little time for the Conservatives generally, or any politician who isn't breaking his/her back for the local community. I just think there are better, less underhand, and certainly less nakedly self-serving ways of holding the authorities to account than are practised by Gavca, under Sally Pickering.
For people who aren't blocked, there are ways, if they wish to, to hold Gavca to account...
