Whenever I hear of crime rates going down, I generally make a mental addition of 'recorded' to that sentence. Lots of people, if asked, would I'm sure argue that with little or no effective response from the police, they don't bother to report crimes unless it's required for insurance purposes, and even then, they may choose not to, to protect their premiums. Now we hear that the police are supposedly failing to finger as many collars as they used to, although they claim this is because of different strategies However, as one of those strategies seems to involve 'community oriented policing' or, as I know it, police officers not doing their jobs for fear of offending a particular section of the community, I'm not entirely convinced by that argument. Massaging the figures is the purview of politicians, not those who are genuinely supposed to be serving the public. Police crime detection is down to 20%
