Prostitution and drugs were the two reasons that he gave me for voting in favour of the riding arena. He seemed to genuinely believe (in a way that only religious people can) that the planning application included security lighting that would rid the park of prostitutes and drugs once and for all. Deluded.

Prostitution and drugs does seem to be a problem in the Barton area, and a problem that seems centred very close to One-Eyed Jacks (Charles Street, the Sinope Street carpark, the alleyway by the church next door), but Pat Hurley's little gaff seems in no danger of being closed down... Why do the girls take drugs and get addicted? It's because they feel unloved and some scumbag pimp pretends to be their friend/boyfriend. It only affects girls with low self-esteem and who are too dim to realise how they are being used. I know for a fact that girls as young as twelve are targeted in Gloucester - and not ones who are 'big for their age' either.

It's an interesting point that this activity is reported as happening in a 'predominantly Muslim area'. Not that I'd like to see any of these 'girls' being stoned to death, but you have to wonder how to reconcile this with the 'vibrant community' people keep espousing in the citizen's pages. The partnership, of course, well under Pat Hurley's thumb now, won't permit my input, but while the Street Rep's group is also tightly controlled (though the 'amalgamation' with the police panel seems to have died a death), nothing short of the restoration of the Barton Residents' Association will address this issue, or that of the Barton Fayre, or even Xmas lights.
But the apathy is now endemic.
VladPootin | June 06 2014, 1:21PM NIGHTRIDER69 - If there's a problem with prostitution in a predominantly Muslim area it must mean that either a lot of the girls' customers are based there or the people who control the girls are there. Of course there are people who will exploit those who are underage and vulnerable in every community and walk of life. But just because I mentioned the chance there could be Muslims involved you throw a hissy fit. And you spelt predator wrong - did you go to one of those dodgy schools in Birmingham by any chance?
Rate 2 Report Justica | June 06 2014, 9:54AM Mr Bhaimia himself brought this subject to our attention, you cannot therefore, condemn people commenting by calling them by the very overused phrase 'racist'. It is apparent from recent serious knife crime including fatalities, this area has serious problems. As Jemmy Wood says 'it doesn't happen in other areas and to most people I know, especially those with children, this area is definitely out of bounds. The mayor and his community should be looking at what goes on there, clean up their act and if it involves YOUNG girls as he says, then the Police should be looking into this, regardless of upsetting certain communities.

Hadagmaja | June 07 2014, 9:40AM Nightrider69 - you cannot ingnire the fact that that many of the *****phile rings cracked throughout the UK of recent years have been predominantly Muslim led and exploited vulnerable young girls. You cannot ignore the fact either that the Muslim faith have been responsible for many of the atrocities against women, in particular; 'honour' killings, a Christian woman in Sudan sentenced to death for marrying and having 2 children, just because her estranged father was a Muslim, a pregnant Muslim woman stoned to death by her family in Pakistan outside a court building in Lahore, a 7 year old girl gang raped in Pakistan by a mob of Muslim men. A strict Muslim 23 year old man in London who raped women to teach them a lesson and kidnapped a 15 year old girl. Vlad is not racist, and clearly makes a point about Barton being a predominantly Muslim area yet there is such a prostitution problem. Of course Muslims can never use a prostitute can they, because they're such honourable men after all!

It only affects girls with low self-esteem and who are too dim to realise how they are being used. I know for a fact that girls as young as twelve are targeted in Gloucester - and not ones who are 'big for their age' either. Drugs, prostitution, gangs, knife, and gun crime Did you see the House of Commons committee? I grew up in Balsall Heath. Street prostitution first appeared in Balsall Heath during the 1950s. Property values fell, attracting Birmingham's poorer migrants. By the 1970s the area was notorious for street robberies and drug dealing. Cheddar Road was the centre of a red-light district worked by 450 women. About half of the 50 houses on this road had prostitutes advertising themselves in the windows, similar to Amsterdam. It was labelled Britain's busiest cul-de-sac. In 1986 an organisation called ANAWIM was formed by the Sisters of Charity to provide outreach support to the prostitutes. In September 1992, a report was published encouraging the formation of a zone of tolerance towards prostitution in Balsall Heath. This was opposed by residents and a local police inspector. The following year Samo Paull, a woman working as a prostitute, was abducted from Balsall Heath and murdered. In 1994 local residents began to organise street patrols forcing the prostitutes and street criminals out of the area. These patrols had the qualified support of the police but were regarded as vigilantes by some. There was an immediate two-thirds reduction in street and window prostitution. By November 1995 they had been almost completely eliminated. The area has now enjoyed a slow revival. House prices are now similar to those in other inner-city areas, while the crime rate is amongst the lowest.

It really is a waste of time waiting for police to fix the problem. THey completely ignored this email, sent on Friday:
Hi, Just to let you know, there is what appears to be a prostitute in Sinope St carpark. White, hair pulled back in a pony tail. Seen on my way back from Asda. The police van that passed me on Barton St heading to the centre just over five minutes ago, mind, seemed more interested in my bike lights (on) than anything else. Joe Kilker
Then, the next day, I nearly ran over what was almost certainly the same prozzie, standing in the middle of Widden St, in a lurid green mini-skirt, with about as much sense of urgency as our ragdoll cat.
I think it's past time to call a public meeting, when Bhaimia is making such a song and dance about it, but no-one will make the call. If they did, Asda would provide a room for the meeting, just around the corner, and Bhaimia and the other councillors could be invited to attend and face questions from residents, or henceforth shut up about their supposed commitment to the community.
Not holding my breath with this one...
