I was casually listening to You and Yours today, and there was the usual stuff about energy companies. Then they had an astonishing article about the corruption at privately run 'treatment centres' for mentally ill people. There are people who get sent to these places against their will and without the permission of relatives. They are supposed to provide assessment and treatment lasting only a few months, but some inmates are kept there for years in order to milk the public purse.
The worst case was one of a woman who had been kept in solitary confinement for nine years in one of these centres, at a cost to the public purse of £12,500 per week! She had no contact with any other human being except through a hatch. She slept on a bean bag and was fed through the hatch. It sounds like one of those awful stories from a country with no human rights laws.

It seems everytime I try (which I've been doing for the last half hour) to look at the programme information for that programme on that day, on the schedule - FM Schedule - I get an 'internal error', and the 'web address you entered could not be found'. I'll try to get an answer from Radio 4 on Twitter, as I know that trying to do so less publicly is a waste of time, but as for the content you reported, Kay, nothing surprises me anymore. Authorities, and private individuals running businesses, get away with as much as they can until they are held to account. I shouldn't wonder if Twitter will provide some of the information that is missing, although reliability can obviously vary...

The wages of the staff at these treatment centres rely on the centre being kept at full capacity. Also, some cases are considered extremely difficult to treat, and so attract much higher payments.
