Frankly, I'm gobsmacked. I have just watched a documentary on BBC2 called You've Been Trumped. It was about Donald Trump's successful attempt to build a golf course on a Site of Special Scientific Interest at Menie near Aberdeen.
Trump's behaviour was so awful that it's amazing that he didn't somehow bully the BBC into dropping the programme.
Previously, all that I had ever heard about the case was that Trump had tried to stop an offshore wind farm because he didn't want it visible from his course.
The planning application was originally turned down by the local authority on environmental grounds, which wasn't too surprising. So, Trump got Alex Salmond and the Scottish government to overturn the decision - simples. That Alex Salmond is a piece of shit. I never liked him, but now I know what a dreadful scumbag he really is.
The SSSI, with its natural sand dunes, has now apparently been irreparably damaged. The development didn't even stick to the plans, but no action was taken against Trump. The locals who didn't want to move were constantly harassed, had their water and electricity illegally cut off and were threatened with compulsory purchase. Two of them also had parts of their property stolen by Trump and were sent threatening demands for money that they didn't owe.
During the making of the documentary, the director was harassed, attacked and arrested by Grampian Police, for no specified reason. (I'm trying to think of a similar occurrence in Gloucester... The police seemed to think that it was their duty to do everything possible to assist Trump.
Trump's view was that the locals were of no consequence and lived in slum conditions, which was patently untrue, yet he repeatedly went on television to complain about and slander them. Anyone would have thought that he was the victim of their actions, rather than the other way around.
Trump was even given an honorary degree by the local university, which prompted the retired chancellor of the university to go to the media and to hand back his own honorary degree in protest.
Trump has got away with it. The BBC called it a David and Goliath battle, but someone seems to have forgotten who won that fight!
The documentary is being repeated late on Monday night.
